Harrison x Ch. Surrey Hill Calamity Jane,SC,FCh
In trying to determine the possible color results of a breeding it can be important to know not only the sire and dam's colors, but also the colors of their parents and the colors of any puppies they may have already produced

Harrison - Surrey Hill Millenium Falcon - sire = brindle & white, dam = blue brindle & white. Harrison's parents show that he carries blue from his dam.

Calamity Jane - Surrey Hill Calamity Jane - sire = blue brindle & white, dam = brindle & white. Calamity Jane's parents colors show that she carries blue from her sire.

Note: yellow, red and fawn are "lumped" together genetically

Harrison and Calamity Jane were bred together 2 times
 1st litter: (1 puppy)  2nd litter: (4 puppies)
1 black brindle with black mask and white
(black brindle over gold fawn)
1 cream
1 red and white
.. 1 blue brindle and white
. 1 silver fawn and white

These parents were an interesting combination and I am including a usefule tool: a color pedigree, as it shows how colors can carry through the generations without being expressed - in this case, blue

A locus

We already know that Calamity Jane is a red and the presence of the red and fawn puppies tells us that Harrison carries the gene for that color. So we have:

Harrison = AyAy (pure for fawn)
Calamity Jane = AyAy (pure for red/fawn)

C locus

Harrison is not described as a silver brindle, nor is Calamity Jane a pale fawn, but one of the puppies was a silver fawn - so we will assume the following:

Harrison = Cc (dominant for warm color and carrying "silvering")
Calamity Jane = Cc (ditto)

D locus

The presence of the blue brindle puppy tells us that both parents carry that gene, which we already know as both have a blue parent - so we have:

Harrison = Dd (dominant for normal color and carrying blue)
Calamity Jane = Dd (ditto)

E locus

Neither parent displays a mask, but the presence of the black-masked brindle puppy tells us that the gene exists so one, or both parents carry it and the presence of the red and fawn puppies without a mask shows that at least one of them is not pure for it. So now we have:

Harrison = EE or Em (brindle and possibly carries the mask)
Calamity Jane = EE or Em- (red and possibly carries the mask)

K locus

Since Harrison is brindle we know he has that gene, but since some of the puppies were not brindle, we know he is not pure for brindle.

Harrison = kbrk (brindle, carrying non-brindle)
Calamity Jane = kk (not dark, not brindle)

R locus

Since neither of the parents nor any of the puppies are described as Roan we will assume the following:

Harrison = rr (displays normal color and does not carry Roan)
Calamity Jane = rr (ditto)

S locus

Both parents display an amount of white that tends more towards the "Irish" pattern of white, but at least one puppy, while having a similar pattern to the parents, carries considerably more white - so we will assume that both parents carry parti-color

Harrison = si sp (Irish Marked white, carrying parti-colored)
Calamity Jane = sisp (ditto)

T locus

Not enough data to tell.

All of this gives us the following analysis of the color genetics involved with these parents and their offspring:

Harrison - Surrey Hill Millenium Falcon- Irish marked brindle = AyAy Cc Dd EE or Em kbrk rr sisp

Calamity Jane - Surrey Hill Calamity Jane - white and red = AyAy Cc Dd EE or Em kk rr sisp

Genetic notation is simply a "short-hand" method of conveying information aHarrisonut the genes carried and/or displayed.  Dominant genes are noted as UPPERCASE and are listed first at each locus, when they are present. Recessive genes are noted as lower case and are listed second at each locus, when a dominant is present.  In the case of 2 dominants or 2 recessives at the same locus the one that is dominant over it's locus partner is listed first. Superscript letters provide futher description of the particular gene's actions.  The above examples convey quick information about what colors these parents can be expected to produce:

Harrison = AyAy Cc Dd EE or Em kbrk rr sisp

AyAy = red/fawn (this includes golden)
C = full expression of pigment, not "washed out" in shade
c = "silvering" or washed out color, Harrison does not express this gene, as it's action is inhibited by the presence of the dominant "C" gene, but we know he carries it as he produced a silver fawn puppy
D = full expression of dark color
d = blue dilution, Harrison does not express this gene, as it's action is inhibited by the presence of the dominant "D" gene, but we know he carries it as he has a blue parent
E = allows the expression of dark pigment
Em = same as for the "E" gene, but allows the further expression the "mask" pattern - in Harrison the action of this gene is not visible, but we know either one or both parents carry it, as they produced a puppy with a mask
rr = not Roaned
si = Harrison displays markings more towards the Irish pattern
sp = carrying parti-color

Calamity Jane = AyAy CC Dd EE or Em kk rr spsp

AyAy = pure for red/fawn
C = full expression of pigment, not "washed out" in shade
c = "silvering" or washed out color, Calamity Jane does not express this gene, as it's action is inhibited by the presence of the dominant "C" gene, but we know she carries it as she produced a silver fawn puppy
D = full expression of dark color
d = blue dilution, Calamity Jane does not express this gene, as it's action is inhibited by the presence of the dominant "D" gene, but we know she carries it as she has a blue parent
E = allows the expression of dark pigment
Em = same as for the "E" gene, but allows the further expression the "mask" pattern - in Calamity Jane the action of this gene is not visible, but we know either one or both parents carry it, as they produced a puppy with a mask
rr = not Roaned
si= Calamity Jane displays markings more towards the Irish pattern
sp = carrying parti-color

The puppies genetics will be:
