Both of these photos are of the same bitch. She was born solid red, and the white roaning appeared as she aged. These photos were taken in England.

Roaning is the opposite of ticking - ticking is the appearance of colored hairs in the white spotting areas, while roaning is the appearance of white hairs is the colored areas. Tiny "stiches" of hair (either white in the colored areas or colored hairs in the white areas) that are present at birth are neither roaning or ticking - both these genes only begin to show their effects after birth and as the puppy grows. Sometimes their effects don't appear until after maturity.
